They're Repeating in America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom two times larger of the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing portion to build it.

He has done things countless times more severe – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – really, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the White House to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom have business with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the president try to upend the old idea about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this change developed more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the fastest-growing cadre among Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as non-believers or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of a powerful ruler appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a storage space, who must quickly flee to another nation to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for other people, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your coat you should give him your sweater too.

The apparent and straightforward reality that the Savior of the gospels calls for a form of radical love centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a controversial faith: attractive to the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Struggle for the Best Among Us

So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags during all protests and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, which is the example of Jesus. In neither case does it mean pretending the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith did not happen; it represents both meekness and faith, a blend that serious US believers should be comfortable with.
