The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
