Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the chance of the former president's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader Donald Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the following day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which included plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without problem on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
