European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
